What Does Wearing Invisalign Feel Like?

May 25, 2023

You can remove Invisalign® invisible aligners from your teeth anytime you want to, but you’ll need to keep them in for at least 22 hours each day in order to keep your treatment plan on track. Twenty-two hours each day, for roughly a year, is a lot of time, so the question arises: what does it actually feel like wearing Invisalign every day?

Let’s take a look at how and what you can expect to feel when you start wearing invisible aligners every day.

How Invisible Aligners Feel in Your Mouth

You won’t experience severe discomfort. Yet, you won’t forget that you’re wearing your invisible aligners, at least not at first. During the first few days for wearing your new aligners, you’ll likely feel mild or moderate tenderness as the aligner trays start to slowly and gently push your teeth into perfect alignment.

In a blog post for A Healthy Slice of Life, author Brittany Dixon describes her first six weeks wearing Invisalign. The discomfort she experienced in the first few days made her question her treatment plan, but then it subsided and the results started to appear.

“On one hand, I was thrilled it was moving my teeth, but on the other, I wondered if I could deal with this every two weeks when I changed trays,” she wrote in the blog post. “After the third day, the pain subsided. Also on about the third day, I could tell my bite was already completely different.”

Along with a bit of soreness, you’ll have to learn to compensate for the slight impact your invisible aligners will have on your speech. This too is often resolved with just a few days of wearing invisible aligners and getting used to them.
